Doubles from Katie Stengel and Larisa Crummer, a masterclass from Kyah Simon and two sensational strikes from Jess Fishlock were the highlights of an entertaining clash as Melbourne City defeated Newcastle Jets 5-2.
In great news for the Westfield Matildas, Simon was back to her crafty best in City’s win on Sunday afternoon.
But it was Jess Fishlock who lit up AAMI Park with a couple of sensational goals for City, who’ve now won two on the trot after their opening day loss to Glory.
STORY OF THE GAME
- On a warm day in Melbourne, a stunning four-goal first half saw both sides trade leads.
- Early on Kyah Simon with a sumptuous finish low into the corner of Britt Eckerstrom’s net gave City the advantage before a Katie Stengel double had the Jets up 2-1.
- City’s Larissa Crummer with a poacher’s goal just before the break to make it 2-2.
- A moment of magic put City ahead when the excellent Steph Catley burst forward and curled an inch-perfect cross to Jess Fishlock who finished spectacularly stretching wide to make it 3-2.
- Crummer racked up her brace with her second to make it 4-2 to the reigning champions.
- Then Fishlock was at it again, picking up the ball outside the box and she went boom! What a goal! 5-2 to City with around 15 minutes left.
