Sydney derby

The Harbour City bragging rights were very much coloured in Sky Blue in 2018/19, but can the Red and Black turn the tide with the launch of a new era in Western Sydney?

Sydney FC opened the 2018/19 season with a 3-0 away win at Marconi Stadium and repeated the same scoreline when they welcomed Wanderers to Leichhardt Oval in Round 11.

Ante Juric’s side ended up lifting the Championship, while Wanderers propped up the rest of the ladder in ninth place.

But with a new coach installed in Dean Heffernan and a new ground to call home in Bankwest Stadium, Western Sydney will striving to make up ground on their city rivals in 2019/20.

Red and Black fans will be hoping for double delight at the first Westfield W-League Sydney Derby to be played at Bankwest Stadium on Friday, 20 December. Markus Babbel’s Hyundai A-League squad will face Western United straight afterwards at Wanderland.

Sydney FC goal v WSW

Melbourne derby

While Melbourne Victory were celebrating lifting the Westfield W-League Premiers Plate in 2018/19, Melbourne City were forced to accept their crushing fate.

Rado Vidošić side had missed out on the Westfield W-League Finals Series by the narrowest of margins, finishing fifth on goal difference, three goals behind Perth Glory.

Victory fell at the first hurdle in the Finals Series in a 4-2 extra time defeat against Glory, leaving both Victorian outfits with unfinished business heading into 2019/20.

Getting the edge in the derby is the first step towards a successful season, especially when you consider that Jeff Hopkins’ outfit claimed a double in 2018/19, with a 1-0 home win and a 2-0 reverse on the road.

Melbourne Derby - Victory City

Big Blue

A Big Blue in any season is going to be a heated rivalry, but when it is Champions v Premiers there is an extra edge to the outcome.

Victory stunned the competition in 2018/19, storming through to clinch their first Westfield W-League Premiership and first trophy for five years since becoming Champions in 2013/14.

But it was the Sky Blues who went on to be crowned Champions for the first time in six years after hitting top form in the Finals Series.

It was no doubt a Championship that Victory had their eye on and Sydney FC did not even beat the Victorians in the process. Hopkins’ side claimed an upset 3-2 win at Netstrate Jubilee Stadium in Round 4, before the rematch ended in a 2-2 draw.

The stakes are raised higher for the second of this season’s two encounters, with a bumper crowd expected at Marvel Stadium for a double header ahead of Victory’s Hyundai A-League match against Adelaide United.

Grand Final rematch

Perth Glory have made it to the Westfield W-League Grand Final three times in five years but not once in their Westfield W-League history have they walked away as Champions.

Following a 4-2 extra time Semi Final win against Premiers Melbourne Victory last season, Glory believed 2018/19 would finally be their year.

But, in an eerie prelude to what happened in the Hyundai A-League Grand Final, Sydney FC would be ones preventing them from lifting their first Championship.

Revenge would be sweet for Glory when the sides meet in Round 4, but the Western Australians will be even more intent on sending a message to the Westfield W-League that 2019/20 is their year.
