Galekovic goes back to Adelaide United in coaching role

Eugene Galekovic has returned to his spiritual home to become Adelaide United’s new goalkeeping coach.

Reds great Galekovic, 37, retired from playing earlier this month and now heads back to the club he captained to Hyundai A-League Grand Final glory in 2016.

The decorated former Caltex Socceroo spent 10 years between the posts at Coopers Stadium before moving to Melbourne City for the final two seasons of his career.

He becomes the first confirmed coaching appointment under new boss Gertjan Verbeek, replacing Frank Juric in charge of the goalkeeping department.

“This is a very exciting time for my family and I,” Galekovic said.

“Being able to come back to Adelaide for this opportunity is something I’m very grateful for.

“Obviously finishing my career recently had me contemplating my next steps in football and coaching is something that I have always wanted to get into.

“Returning to the Reds and being able to give back to the club that gave me so much over my time here is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Galekovic will work with former understudy Paul Izzo along with Daniel Margush and Isaac Richards.

United chairman Piet van der Pol welcomed the “true legend” back to Adelaide.

“Eugene is arguably the best goalkeeper the A-League has seen and to have his experience and wisdom at the forefront of our player development is very exciting,” he said.

“The appointment of Eugene reaffirms our commitment to reunite with past players in order to establish a strong culture within the club as well as a more meaningful connection with the South Australian football community.”

Galekovic was named Hyundai A-League Goalkeeper of the Year four times and attended two FIFA World Cups with the Caltex Socceroos.
