Following two weeks of derby action, yet another Westfield W-League classic hits the nation’s TV screens as champions Canberra United tackle glamour side Melbourne City.
City continued their stunning form with the league’s new kids on the block, now boasting a perfect record at the top of the ladder with 12 goals for and just one against.
Their 4-0 win at Perth Glory last Saturday suggests their form remains undiminished despite the absence of their Westfield Matildas stars for a week. Even more poignantly perhaps was the arrival of three headline international names – Scottish pair Kim Little and Jennifer Beattie, plus Wales captain Jess Fishlock – who all seemed to fit in seamlessly at the club.
It all makes for a scary prospect for any opponent. But if there is one team that appears well equipped to halt the City express it is Canberra United.
The team from the nation’s capital most recently tore apart Sydney FC in some style for a 3-0 win, before having last weekend off. Much like City, United boast their own posse of Westfield Matildas players, who have been supplemented by some high-quality imports, not least of all England FIFA Women’s World Cup striker Jodie Taylor who is set to make her first start for the club.
It all makes for a delicious mix for TV viewers, as well as supporters in Gosford where Canberra will host the match in the first meeting between the two clubs.
Watch all the action Live from 2.00pm nationally on Fox Sports (Channel 505), or ABC TV. Or catch-up on ABC iView.
