Emily Gielnik seals move to Vittsjo

Emily Gielnik’s time in the Westfield W-League is set to come an end this weekend as she departs Brisbane Roar for Swedish side Vittsjo GIK.

Gielnik will farewell Roar this coming Sunday as she takes part in the final game of the regular Westfield W-League season before jetting off to join Vittsjo GIK.

She will have to depart Brisbane earlier than expected and miss her side’s possible finals run due to her registration being required to be completed in time before the Damallsvenskan transfer window shuts.

“I wanted to finish out the season with the Roar and that was my intention,” Gielnik said in regard to her move on Brisbane Roar’s website.

“But in terms of what’s best for me, I had no choice but to sign in Sweden so that I didn’t miss that transfer window. It’s just a really unfortunate circumstance.

“However, I think the squad depth we have is stronger than any other team in the W-League. I have full faith in the girls. Polks [Clare Polkinghorne] is really the rock of our team and that’s a hard one with her, but everyone is replaceable to some degree.

“We most definitely have the capabilities within the team.”

The 28-year-old striker is no stranger to Vittsjo as she re-joins the Swedish club for her second spell where she will be set to link up Brisbane teammate Clare Polkinghorne who will also depart the club this weekend.

Roar fans can catch both Gielnik and Polkinghorne in action this Sunday when they host Newcastle Jets at Lions Stadium (Kick-off 6:05pm AEDT).
