Socceroo and Sydney FC star Brett Emerton has been named as Captain of the Foxtel All Stars for the sold-out clash with global football giants Manchester United at ANZ Stadium next Saturday.

The 34-year-old Socceroo veteran was thrilled to be selected by Foxtel All Stars coach Ange Postecoglou to lead the side onto ANZ Stadium when the football world-s attention will be focussed on the stars of the Hyundai A-League.

“It-s a huge honour to be named as Captain of the inaugural Foxtel All Stars team for what is a special night for Australian football,” Emerton said. “There are some great players in this squad and it will be a thrill to lead the side out in front of 84,000 fans.

“Manchester United is a massive football club and we are all looking forward to what will be an unforgettable night.”

Postecoglou named Emerton as Foxtel All Stars captain after the team-s first training session this morning, citing his experience with Blackburn Rovers and the Socceroos for the decision.

“Brett is a very experienced player who has played football on the biggest stage and will be a great captain for the All Stars team,” Postecoglou said. “He-s a player that has earned respect for what he has achieved and he-ll be a good leader for this game.

“The match against Manchester United will be a huge occasion and Brett has been in that cauldron and will be a steadying influence on the rest of the team.”

In a change to the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad, Western Sydney Wanderers livewire Youssouf Hersi has been withdrawn from the squad due to a medical assessment related to hamstring soreness.

Adelaide United’s midfielder Marcelo Carrusca has been drafted in as Hersi’s replacement and will join the All Stars in Sydney tomorrow.
