Elimination Final: when City played Roar in 2017/18

For the third season in a row, Melbourne City will host a Hyundai A-League Elimination Final at AAMI Park when they take on Brisbane Roar on Friday night.

Both sides head into this one in reasonable form, with Roar winning seven of their last 11 matches, while City had a three-game winning streak brought to an end with defeat in Auckland last weekend.

City will start favourites against John Aloisi’s side, but Roar boast a squad choc-full of big-game experience.

We take a look back at how the sides fared when they played each other in 2017/18.

Round 1 – Melbourne City 2-0 Brisbane Roar

Bruce Kamau was the star as Melbourne City got their campaign off to a flying start.

The City flier nabbed a brace to kick-start a run of four consecutive wins for Warren Joyce’s side.

Round 7 – Brisbane Roar 3-1 Melbourne City

Defender Avraam Papadopoulos scored twice to give Brisbane a drought-breaking 3-1 win at Suncorp Stadium.

Roar had been winless through their first six games, but the defender’s rare brace and a first Brisbane goal for Eric Bautheac were enough to secure all three points.

Round 19 – Brisbane Roar 1-2 Melbourne City

Melbourne City won a hugely entertaining encounter to close to within four points of Newcastle in second place on the Hyundai A-League ladder.

Massimo Maccarone scored the opening goal for Brisbane, but after Marcin Budzinski and Stefan Mauk had taken City ahead, the Italian missed a golden chance to draw Roar level, fluffing a penalty in the final 20 minutes.
