Western Sydney Wanderers weathered the storm in Newcastle, absorbing wave after wave of attacks before finding a last minute winner to take home the three points with a 2-1 win.
Newcastle Jets continued their positive early season form almost instantly, scoring in just the third minute through Jenna Kingsley who met Rhali Dobson’s cross from the left with a classy back stick header.
Dobson continued to cause headaches for the Wanderers defence, shooting narrowly over the bar in the 20th minute following a sixty metre run, then forcing Wanderers keeper Jada Mathyssen-Whyman into a diving save on the half-hour.
Neither side could add to the score line despite an abundance of shots, in front of a buoyant 1,724 crowd.
The Wanderers ensured an interesting finish to the match when they equalised in the 57th minute, with Chloe O’Brien knocking in a loose ball following a goalmouth scramble.
The Jets continued to dominate the match, creating opportunity after opportunity, but they failed to take their chances which potentially would come back to haunt them at the end of the match.
This turned out to be exactly the case, as Wanderers defender Carmelina Moscato headed home the winner in injury time, making the score 2-1 to the away side.
It was the Wanderers’ first win of the season, and they join Newcastle on four points.
Next week they take on Melbourne Victory at Marconi Stadium, and the Jets are at home again against Canberra.
