‘El Tornado’ helps sink Sydney FC as title stays alive: E-League Round 8 wrap

Sydney FC fell to their first E-League defeat in the competition’s penultimate round, missing a chance to be crowed Premiers.

The absence of star PS4 player Mark Brijeski halted the Sky Blues’ charge to the title as the door opened to Melbourne City ahead of next week’s final set of matches.

While top spot was left in the balance after a tight and tense Round 8, all talk surrounded the incredible ‘El Tornado’ scored by Adelaide United’s Zachary ‘vDreamz-Shooter’ May-Burgess.

Melbourne City 4-3 Central Coast Mariners

  • Marcus Gomes was beaten on Xbox but, with team-mate Joshingwood unavailable, he did enough across two legs to help Melbourne City leapfrog Central Coast Mariners into second.

PS4: Marcus ‘SoccerStar00777’ Gomes 4-2 Kiran ‘KyrenFIFA’ Gupta

Marcus Gomes proved marginally too good for Kiran Gupta on PS4 as his class eventually told in a hard-fought 4-2 win.

The City competitor saw a pair of leads cancelled out during an entertaining four-goal first half, with Gupta’s second equaliser a stunning low finish from beyond the box.

But Gomes finally got the buffer he needed when he struck twice more in the 15 minutes after the interval.

He had the opportunity from the penalty spot to create an even advantage for the second leg, but Gupta saved the spot-kick and was thankful the follow-up drifted past the post.

Xbox: Marcus ‘SoccerStar00777’ Gomes 0-1 Matthew ‘StrawHat Camels’ Camilleri

Marcus Gomes did what was required despite slipping to a 1-0 defeat to Matthew Camilleri.

Knowing a single-goal loss would still be enough for overall success, that’s exactly what Gomes got after Camilleri struck in the 88th minute.

Camels had been starved of possession until that point and left it too late for a potential aggregate equaliser, although he will take confidence from briefly sending a scare through Gomes.

Melbourne Victory 5-4 Wellington Phoenix

  • Melbourne Victory bagged their first triumph in E-League history with a nervy two-leg victory over Wellington Phoenix.

PS4: Mouad ‘MuadZwed’ Zwed 2-0 Christian ‘Fweshest’ Bartolilo

Mouad Zwed continued his good run of form with an accomplished 2-0 win over Christian Bartolilo.

Zwed broke the deadlock with a towering Sergio Ramos header that split the teams at the break.

He had to be patient despite a string of opportunities to double the advantage, but a second for Zwed eventually did come with a tidy finish late in the match.

Xbox: Mouad ‘MuadZwed’ Zwed 3-4 Justin ‘Justmanutd12’ Josevski

Mouad Zwed survived an almighty fright as he struck late to salvage a 4-3 defeat to Justin Josevski that proved just enough for an overall win.

The early exchanges were marked by wastefulness and Josevski was made to pay by two quickfire Zwed goals that seemingly had Victory in complete control.

However, Josevski’s tactical reshuffle brought about a much-needed lifeline on the half-hour mark and he sensationally notched another two before half-time.

Phoenix only needed a further one to restore parity on aggregate and, incredibly, the goal arrived within eight minutes of the restart.

Yet, with all the momentum against him, Zwed somehow recaptured his composure to undo all of Josevski’s good work with a decisive tie-winner as the clocked ticked toward the end of a classic.

Western Sydney Wanderers 5-3 Brisbane Roar

  • Western Sydney Wanderers were always in command against Brisbane Roar despite dropping the Xbox leg.

PS4: Rick ‘RDBOULETTT’ Tran 4-0 Dino ‘ol_Mate_’ Flocco

Rick Tran picked up from where he left off last week in dispatching Dino Flocco 4-0.

Tran, coming off a key win over Mouad Zwed in Round 7, opened up a handy lead with two goals in the space of six minutes through Brazil legend Ronaldo.

Two more after half-time from the in-form Wanderer capped off a comprehensive victory that meant the tie was all but over at the midway mark.

Xbox: Joseph ‘OhNoAGoat’ Nassar 1-3 James ‘Cripsy’ Williams

James Williams broke a long wait for a win by impressively coming from behind to beat Joseph Nassar 3-1.

Cripsy had a mountain to climb following the PS4 leg and it remained that way after he and Nassar shared a goal apiece in the first 20 minutes.

Though he never truly threatened an unlikely overall result, the Roar representative did grab a morale-boosting individual win as two second-half goals left the Goat with back-to-back defeats.

Sydney FC 3-6 Adelaide United

  • Adelaide United became the first E-League outfit to beat a Sydney FC side shorn of key man Mark Brijeski. 

PS4: Samer ‘Samer96_’ Elbadar 0-4 Zachary ‘vDreamz-Shooter’ May-Burgess

Zachary May-Burgess got Adelaide off to an unbelievable start in the first leg with an incredible 4-0 thumping of Samer Elbadar.

May-Burgess grabbed a shock opener with an angled low drive in off the post, before David de Gea came to his rescue at the other end.

Still leading after the restart, the Reds player was brimming with confidence and put that into a practice with a stunning ‘El Tornado’ second.

Cristiano Ronaldo delivered the brilliant skill move and it was that man again who netted twice more for Adelaide to leave the Sky Blues on the brink of a first overall loss.

Xbox: Samer ‘Samer96_’ Elbadar 3-2 Jamie ‘FUTWIZ Jamie’ O’Doherty

Samer Elbadar was unable to salvage an aggregate result despite coming from an early goal down to overcome Jamie O’Doherty 3-2 on Xbox.

Behind in the ninth minute, Elbadar first restored parity for the match after a quarter of an hour and then made it 2-1 seconds before the half-time whistle.

Elbadar scored again with 20 minutes remaining to give himself an outside chance of a monster turnaround, but O’Doherty steadied to net a nerve-settling second late in normal time.

Newcastle Jets 3-6 Perth Glory

  • Perth Glory held onto sixth courtesy of David Cook’s crunch Xbox victory against Dane Crow of Newcastle Jets.

PS4: Bohdan ‘BLfifa’ Ling 3-3 Peter ‘saisanas’ Saisanas

Bohdan Ling coughed up a two-goal lead on the way to drawing 3-3 with a fast-finishing Peter Saisanas.

Saisanas was celebrating his birthday but Ling quickly set about spoiling the party with two goals in the first 33 minutes.

Peter from Perth pulled one back immediately after Ling’s second and he was right in the mix for a comeback victory when he lasered in a low finish with 25 minutes to play.

The Glory man’s ambitions look to be shattered by an 83rd-minute strike from Ling, but he recovered to bury one final equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Xbox: Dane ‘Bossierhickory8’ Crow 0-3 David ‘HighFly357’ Cook

David Cook fired Perth Glory to a vital overall victory by seeing off Dane Crow 3-0 on Xbox.

With the tie in the balance, Glory got off to an ideal start by taking the advantage through Thierry Henry in just the eighth minute.

And after a nervy wait, Cook’s patience eventually paid off as he struck twice in the final 10 minutes to complete the job – keeping Perth three points ahead of seventh-placed Roar.
