He’s been a revelation in his short Hyundai A-League career so far but imposing defender Bart Schenkeveld says it’s Melbourne City’s team ethos which is behind their perfect start to the season.
City is currently out in front on the Hyundai A-League ladder with a 100% record of three wins from their first three games.
Schenkeveld has earned rave reviews for his no-nonsense style and defensive nous, giving City a steelier edge at the back.
Along with the likes of Iacopo La Rocca and Michael Jakobsen, City appear far more resolute and have conceded just once this season.
But the Dutchman isn’t taking all the credit for City’s improved defensive structure himself.
“I think the team as a whole has been amazing,” Schenkeveld said.
“Everyone has played their role and we do it as a team. I’m proud of the boys, we have two clean sheets and one goal against us.
“Every day, everybody works hard and realises that the win is one thing, but we are looking for the process and that takes time.
“No one is happy with just one win and that’s what is driving us at the moment.”
City face a tricky test of their superb start to the campaign, with a trip to Adelaide to play the unbeaten Reds on Saturday night.
After enduring injury issues during his career, the 26-year-old says he’s in top shape and is relishing every minute he has on the pitch.
“When I’m fit, I want to give my everything,” Schenkeveld said.
“I’ve had injuries in the past and it makes you grateful. Training and playing games is the most beautiful thing you can do and I realised that it’s not normal to go out on the field and train because I’ve been away from the ground too.
“I might appreciate it more than my opponent and that’s what drives me.
“[At City], it’s nice to play, the supporters are great, the stadium is great. The preparation has been great and we will be ready for Saturday.”
Saturday night’s clash will be extra special for City goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, who takes on his former club for the first time since moving back to Melbourne.
