The Westfield W-League is set for a mouth-watering finale with attack-minded Perth Glory and Melbourne City having already played out what many are calling the ‘game of the season’.
Sunday will see the Westfield W-League 2017 Grand Final take place in Perth, with the Glory looking to go one better than two seasons ago when they lost their only previous season decider.
Standing in their way are the reigning champions – a crown Melbourne City claimed last year in their near-perfect maiden Westfield W-League season.
But the Glory have every reason to have self-belief against the star-studded City.
Two days after Christmas, Perth Glory visited Melbourne City and the upshot was a glittering spectacle of high-quality football.
A see-sawing contest included a couple of comebacks, and some goals that wouldn’t have been out of place in any league in the world.
Rosie Sutton put the Glory ahead, but City midfield ace Jess Fishlock equalised with a gravity-defying volley. Aivi Luik saw City take the lead for the first time, but the home team weren’t banking on the x-factor that is Sam Kerr.
The Westfield Matildas’ forward fired home an equaliser and then nailed a curling effort inside the far post that could not have been more inch-perfect.
“We really wanted to get this win,” Kerr said after the match. “It (the comeback) shows how strong our team are and the team morale we have.”
In truth, there could have been ten goals in the match and the final outcome could have been anything.
The match, and indeed the performance, was something of a turning point for the Glory who overcame a slow start to reach top spot at one point, before being edged into second.
One thing is for sure. If the two teams turn on a display anything like that one over the holiday period, then the fans at nib stadium on Sunday are in for a rare treat.
The Westfield W-League 2017 Grand Final will be broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports and ABC TV.
