Davies must battle familiar faces to keep Brisbane’s season alive

The opportunity to get one over a few familiar faces could be the perfect motivation Darren Davies needs to snap Brisbane Roar’s eight-match win-less run.

Roar interim boss Davies will face former mentor Kevin Muscat when his Melbourne Victory side come calling at Suncorp Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The 40-year-old was one of Muscat’s lieutenants when Victory clinched the 2014/15 Championship, and Davies says he’s relishing the chance to lead Brisbane into what is shaping as a do-or-die contest for Roar’s faltering top-six hopes.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a few old friends. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club,” Davies said.

“They’ve obviously been very successful. Kevin has been very successful during his tenure there.

“I’m looking forward to seeing them but by the same token we’re going to give it our best shot to beat them as well.”

Brisbane have played five of the Hyundai A-League top six in their last six matches, a streak which began in defeat to Tuesday night’s visitors a month ago and has culminated in the club’s worst-ever run of form.

That 4-2 loss proved the penultimate fixture of ex-coach John Aloisi’s reign, but Roar have rallied under Davies since, and will be looking to turn their battling performances into a result against Victory.

“The last time they come up they had a sending off which completely changed the game,” he continued.

“We’re looking forward to having them back up here and having another go at them.

“I said last week we want to be the best, so we need to test ourselves.”
