Sydney has been dealt a massive blow with news that young striker Kofi Danning will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Sunday’s National Youth League match against Melbourne Victory.

Danning landed awkwardly after contesting a ball during the Sky Blues’ 1-0 win over the Victory and tests on Monday morning confirmed that he’ll require surgery.

The 18-year-old is expected to be out of action for up to nine months.

“I’m disappointed at the injury because I have enjoyed being part of the first grade squad this year but I know I have to forget my disappointment and focus on doing everything right to make sure I am ready to play at the start of next season,” Danning said.

“I spoke to some of the senior players this morning who have had the same injury and operation and everybody said they will help me get through it.”

Danning has played eight matches this year and scored once way back in Round 1 in the 3-2 win over North Queensland.
