Could Eriksson coach in Hyundai A-League?

The former England and Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has refused to rule out a move to Australia.

Eriksson currently calls Shenzhen FC home in China’s second division after he was sacked by Chinese Super League powerhouse Shanghai SIPG last year.

The 69-year-old has been based in the lucrative region since 2013, having also guided Guangzhou R&F to the AFC Champions League for the first time in their history.

In fact, he coached against Kevin Muscat’s Melbourne Victory for SIPG in the Asian Champions League last year. 

Eriksson – whose career has taken him to Benfica, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Lazio, Mexico, Ivory Coast, and Leicester City among others – is happy in China and at Shenzhen, where promotion to the CSL is the minimum target, but the much-travelled Swede knows anything is possible in football.

“I have been in football so many years that I’ve stopped planning for the future,” Eriksson told Omnisport.

“Everything is possible for me, as long as I feel healthy and I want to work with the players every day.

“So what happens tomorrow, you never know.”

Melbourne City could be a possible destination for Eriksson as the cashed-up Hyundai A-League side evaluate their coaching situation.

Michael Valkanis was appointed head coach for the remainder of the season in January following John van’ t Schip’s resignation but it remains to be seen whether the 42-year-old will continue in his role in 2017/18.

In the 1990s, Eriksson coached Paul Okon at Lazio – who now coaches in the Hyundai A-League with Central Coast Mariners.
