Western Sydney Wanderers have confirmed captain Robert Cornthwaite has departed the club to pursue an opportunity overseas.
Cornthwaite, who joined the Red & Black in July 2016, has been linked with a move to Malaysian side Perak TGB.
The 32-year-old was named the fourth captain in Western Sydney’s history in July 2017 and skippered the side for the first time in a showpiece friendly against Premier League giants Arsenal that month.
The defender leaves Wanderers having made 36 appearances and scored three goals across all competitions.
Cornthwaite said he’ll always look back on his time at the club with fondness.
“I would love to thank everyone involved at Western Sydney for making my time at the club so enjoyable. Although it was for only a short while, it has had a lasting impression on my professional career,” Cornthwaite said.
“Captaining the club is a career highlight and something I am very proud of.
“I would like to wish all the staff and especially all the players good luck for the remainder of the season and beyond.”
The news comes ahead of Western Sydney’s home clash with Melbourne Victory on Friday night, which could see Josep Gombau’s men cement their place inside the top six.
