The depth of Sydney FC’s squad will be severely tested with midfielder Simon Colosimo ruled out for up to three months with a groin injury.

The 29-year-old has been diagnosed with osteitis pubis. After attempting to manage the condition during the opening rounds, he will now undergo surgery to correct the problem.

“It’s disappointing to lose a player of Simon’s quality for any length of time,” Sydney coach John Kosmina said.

“He’s an important player for us but I think we’ve already shown this season we’ve got enough talent in the team to get the job done during his absence.”

The former Perth Glory captain will have surgery on Tuesday, but is already focused on returning to full fitness.

“It’s frustrating,” he said. “No player wants to spend time sitting on the sidelines but it’s a problem I need to have fixed.”

“My focus now is on getting fit and getting back on the field as soon as possible to help Sydney win another championship.”

Kosmina is now considering his options and may look to bring in an injury replacement for the classy midfielder.
