City’s six-goal saviour, Sydney Derby drama: E-League Round 2 wrap

Melbourne City superstar Marcus Gomes stole the show in Round 2 of the E-League as two of Australian football’s fiercest rivalries lit up Thursday’s action.

Sydney FC claimed inaugural Sydney Derby honours with a narrow victory over Western Sydney Wanderers, while Adelaide United powered past Melbourne Victory in the first chapter of the ‘Eriginal Rivalry’.

But the result of the round belonged to elite gamer Gomes, who overturned a three-goal first-leg margin to secure a memorable triumph for City.

Central Coast Mariners 4-2 Wellington Phoenix

  • Central Coast Mariners made it six points from a possible six with victories in both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox legs of their clash with Wellington Phoenix.

PS4: Kiran ‘KyrenFIFA’ Gupta 2-1 Christian ‘Fweshest’ Bartolillo

Kiran Gupta came from behind to edge Christian Bartolillo 2-1 and give Central Coast a handy first-leg advantage against Wellington.

Beaten 6-2 on debut last week, Bartolillo had a point to prove and made the perfect start with a ninth-minute opener.

But Gupta’s introduction of Lionel Messi changed the game after half-time, the superstar Argentine scoring twice to secure the Mariners man his first win.

Xbox: Matthew ‘StrawHat Camels’ Camilleri 2-1 Justin ‘Justmanutd12’ Josevski

Matthew Camilleri capped off the Mariners’ convincing aggregate victory over Wellington with a 2-1 defeat of Justin Josevski.

Camilleri extended Central Coast’s advantage early in proceedings and added another after half-time, Trent Buhagiar scoring for the second straight week.

Josevski did pull one back but it wasn’t enough to prevent Phoenix from suffering losses in both legs.

Brisbane Roar 4-3 Newcastle Jets

  • Brisbane Roar became the second club to stay perfect in the E-League with a narrow aggregate victory against Newcastle Jets.

PS4: Dino ‘ol_Mate_’ Flocco 2-2 Bohdan ‘BLfifa’ Ling

Newcastle debutant Bohdan Ling was made to settle for an entertaining 2-2 draw with Brisbane’s Dino Flocco.

Both competitors were on target inside the first 15 minutes before Ling broke the game open with a delightful dinked finish just before the break.

Flocco restored parity with a fine one-touch passing move, but Brisbane were denied a winner by the post during a tense finale.

Xbox: James ‘iCripsy’ Williams 2-1 Dane ‘bossierhickory8’ Crow

James Williams held off a fast-finishing Dane Crow to secure Brisbane a decisive 2-1 win over Newcastle in the Xbox encounter.

Williams stepped up under the pressure of a drawn first leg, racing to a two-goal lead over the opening 45 minutes.

Crow worked a classy move through Roar’s defence to reduce the deficit but, despite going close to a leveller on several occasions, it proved only a consolation.

Melbourne Victory 1-5 Adelaide United

  • Adelaide United confidently claimed ‘Eriginal Rivalry’ bragging rights over Melbourne Victory as an historic Hyundai A-League conflict took on E-League life.

PS4: Mouad ‘MuadZwed’ Zwed 1-2 Zachary ‘vDreamz-Shooter’ May-Burgess

Zachary May-Burgess overcame Victory’s Mouad Zwed 2-1 to get Adelaide up and running in the first leg.

The Reds profited early from an unfortunate Victory own goal, only to have their lead cancelled out when Zwed clinically pierced May-Burgess’ defence.

But Adelaide’s dominance grew after the interval and paid dividends with a Cristiano Ronaldo winner five minutes from time.

Xbox: Jamie ‘FUTWIZ Jamie’ O’Doherty 3-0 Mitch ‘ALCATRAZZ_2025’ Austin

Jamie O’Doherty stamped Adelaide’s authority on the Eriginal Rivalry in a commanding 3-0 win over Mitch Austin.

O’Doherty quickly took command of the tie with a calming pair of goals in just over 20 minutes of play.

And a third on 74 minutes put the tie beyond doubt, giving O’Doherty and his club their first points of the competition.

Perth Glory 5-7 Melbourne City

  • Needing to overturn a three-goal deficit, Marcus Gomes came up clutch for Melbourne City to snatch the points away from Perth Glory.

PS4: Peter ‘saisanas’ Saisanas 4-1 Josh ‘joshingwood’ Wood

Peter Saisanas piled on three second-half goals to lead Perth to a dominant 4-1 first-leg win over City’s Josh Wood.

Saisanas bulldozed through Wood’s defence to open the scoring midway through the opening stanza, although the City competitor got back on level terms with a fine curling finish on the stroke of half-time.

Perth’s PS4 star looks to be one to stop, though, and struck three times after the interval to nix any threat of a comeback.

Xbox: David ‘HighFly357’ Cook 1-6 Marcus ‘SoccerStar07777’ Gomes

Marcus Gomes stormed to a 6-1 crushing of Glory’s David Cook that secured City a stunning aggregate success.

Set a three-goal deficit, Gomes immediately turned up the heat by reducing the margin to one inside the first 12 minutes.

Cook responded soon after, only for Gomes to strike twice more through Bruno Fornaroli and Cristiano Ronaldo in an exceptional first half.

And the City star’s surge continued with a further two goals in the final 25 minutes to complete a stirring performance.

Sydney FC 5-4 Western Sydney Wanderers

  • Sydney FC survived a nervy Xbox encounter to beaten Western Sydney Wanderers in a fittingly hard-fought Sydney Derby.

PS4: Mark ‘xMarkoHD’ Brijeski 2-0 Rick ‘DOUBLETTT’ Tran

Mark Brijeski grabbed the early bragging rights for Sydney FC with an accomplished 2-0 win over Rick Tran.

After a scoreless first half, it was Brijeski who broke the deadlock from a 63rd-minute corner.

And the Sky Blues doubled their advantage late on as Brijeski sealed his second successive victory.

Xbox: Samer ‘Samer96_’ Elbadar 3-4 Joseph ‘OhNoAGoat’ Nassar

Joseph Nassar’s superb Xbox fightback fell agonisingly short of earning Western Sydney a point despite a 4-3 victory over Sydney FC’s Samer Elbadar.

The pair traded goals in the first half, before two quick strikes from Albadar appeared to have put the tie beyond doubt.

That was until Nassar’s dogged late rally produced three match-turning goals.

While it wasn’t enough to secure an overall draw, the comeback did ensure Wanderers knocked their rivals off top spot.
