Melbourne City defender Alex Wilkinson says his team were “average” in the first half of their loss to Perth Glory on Sunday night at nib Stadium.
City blew their chance to take a significant step towards winning the Hyundai A-League Premiership by losing 3-2 to Kenny Lowe’s high-flyers.
After starting Round 26 in top spot following a comprehensive 3-0 win over Phoenix on Easter Monday, the defeat saw City drop to fourth.

The Melbourne club are now only an outside chance to land the Premiers’ Plate in what will be a blockbuster final round where they face fellow Premiership aspirant Adelaide United.
“The first half especially we weren’t there. It was very average,” Wilkinson told Fox Sports after the loss in the West.
“We couldn’t keep the ball and couldn’t string passes together. I don’t know what the excuses were.
“It’s nowhere near good enough. We’ve got a quick turnaround to Friday night against Adelaide and we have to improve a lot.”
Wilkinson said the biggest disappointment with Sunday’s result was the side has seemingly squandered the chance to land the club’s first major piece of silverware.
“We had it in our own hands. Win two games and we would have finished top,” he said.
“It wasn’t to be. But now we regroup and it’s important we beat Adelaide, we still have a chance to finish top.
“Friday night, if we win we put the pressure on the other teams and then see what happens.”
