A stunning strike from North Queensland new boy Adam Casey has seen the Fury beat Adelaide 1-0 in a pre-season friendly in Townsville on Friday night.

In a keenly contested match a week out from the start of the A-League season, Casey’s goal in the 70th minute gave the Fury a much-needed boost ahead of their opening game.

The match was Adelaide’s last before they host the Newcastle Jets in round one next Friday and they still have a bit of work to do if they hope to get their season off on the right note.

The Fury had the best chance of the first half when Chris Grossman squandered a good opportunity on the counter attack but they should have taken the lead on the hour mark.

Reds defender Nigel Boogaard brought down Isaka Cernak in the box but Adelaide keeper Eugene Galekovic pulled off a brilliant save from Gareth Edds’ penalty.

But it just delayed the inevitable as Casey, an off-season signing from A-League champions Sydney FC, launched a blistering strike from 25 metres out which gave the Socceroos keeper no chance.
