Newcastle Jets winger David Carney concedes the club shouldn’t have allowed talented young players to leave but he’s been impressed with the new coaching team at the ambitious Hyundai A-League club.
The Jets, under new coach Scott Miller and assistant JP de Marigny, are preparing for Tuesday night’s Round of 32 fixture in the Westfield FFA Cup against Perth Glory at Magic Park.
Speaking after training on Monday, the former Socceroo was honest in his assessment of the Jets, who’ve had to rebuild following a tumultuous Season 10 in the A-League.
“The preparation has been spot on, but we definitely need two or three quality players, there’s no question,” he told reporters.
“Especially after last year letting some good young players go like Hooley [Andrew Hoole] and Craig Goodwin and Connor Chapman. You need to keep those young players and build your squad around them.
“At the minute, there’s sort of a rebuilding phase because we let a lot of good young players go last year which we shouldn’t have.”

But the former Sydney FC winger has been impressed with the new coaching team put in place officially in June but who’ve only had a month working with the team. ‘
“Since day one there’s been a good vibe. Training has been really good, really intense and the improvement from the younger boys has been great.
“It’s been a while since we’ve played a game, it’s a long off-season with the A-League so you’re itching to get out there and play.
“The boys are really up for it. Hopefully we can put in a good shift and play some good football while we’re there.
“They’ve [Glory] still got a good squad. They’ve lost a couple of key players there’s no doubt but they’ll be still very competitive.
“There are a lot of big boys so we’ll have to be switched on especially from set pieces.”
