Adelaide United midfielder Zenon Caravella has been named club champion for this season.
Caravella won the top individual honour in his debut season with the club after leaving Gold Coast United.
While it was a disappointing season for the Reds collectively with a ninth-placed finish, Caravella made it one to remember personally, playing 25 of a possible 27 games to become one of the club’s most consistent performers.
“It was totally unexpected but it’s a lovely thing to get any award at any club and I’m very happy,” Caravella said.
“I go out to play and do what I can and try to get everyone involved and get the mood going, but to win this is fantastic.
“I’ve won an NSL championship before and that was a highlight of my career and this is right up there, to have this award I’m very honoured.”
Coach John Kosmina presented the award to Caravella at the Festival Function Centre on Friday as well as awards to runners-up Osama Malik and captain Eugene Galekovic.
The pair narrowly missed out on the top prize but Malik went home with the Rising Star award for best young player while Galekovic claimed his second players’ player award, which is voted on by his peers as the player to have consistently been the most valuable on the pitch.
Cairns-born Caravella scored against his former side in week six and is set to line up for the Reds in Wednesday’s Asian Champions League clash with Uzbekistan’s Bunyodkor.
