International star departs Canberra to pursue opportunity with ‘giant’ South American club

Canberra United forward Maria Rojas has departed the Liberty A-League, joining Chilean club Santiago Morning.

The 36-year-old Chile international returns to the club she represented in 2019 on what Canberra United revealed as a “lucrative contract.”

Santiago Morning play in both the Chilean Primera Division and the Copa Libertadores Femenina – a tournament featuring the very best players and clubs from the CONMEBOL confederation.

In a club statement confirming her departure, Rojas thanked Canberra United and her teammates “for recognising this opportunity I have with this Chilean football giant.”

Canberra United CEO Samantha Farrow added: ‘“We are happy to allow Cote to pursue this exciting opportunity.

“We are always enthusiastic about seeing players who have appeared for Canberra United on the world stage.”

Rojas joined Canberra for a second stint at the club in the off-season, making eight starts in 13 appearances.
