Canberra United have climbed level on points atop the Westfield W-League with a hard-earned 3-2 win over Perth Glory at McKellar Park on Saturday.
Amy Sayer and Laura Bassett scored second half goals to see the home side join Glory and Brisbane Roar on nine points.
Canberra had won each of their past seven home matches against Glory and began in familiar fashion, Grace Maher picking out the bottom corner in the 19th minute to open the scoring.
They were made to work for three points, though, as the in-form Rachel Hill equalised on the stroke of half-time with her seventh goal in five games.
But the advantage was restored just prior to the hour when Sayer thumped home an incredible goal from outside the area, before England international Bassett all but sealed a crucial third victory in four matches with around 10 minutes remaining.
There was still time for Glory youngster Alexia Moreno to heighten the hosts’ nerves by reducing the deficit from a free-kick, but Canberra saw out a tense final few moments to inflict a second defeat on the away side.
More to come.
