Can the Reds revive their season tonight?

Adelaide United’s poor run of form can be traced back to pre-season, according to centre back Dylan McGowan.

The Reds have yet to win a competitive game this season as they sit bottom of the Hyundai A-League with just two points.

They were also eliminated from the Westfield FFA Cup by Redlands United at the first hurdle in early August.

Having also lost all three pre-season friendlies against Hyundai A-League opposition, Adelaide have also lost key players during this season to injury. 

In spite of all that, Gui Amor’s men have played well in patches but the wins are yet to materialise. 

“The key thing was we didn’t win much in pre-season either. 

“We didn’t have a good run in the FFA Cup, we got knocked out early doors, so that’s always a hallmark of a good pre-season, you can get a few competitive games,” McGowan told reporters on Thursday.

“Even the games against the A-League sides, we weren’t winning, so in terms of that winning mentality we’re struggling for it at the moment.”

Despite that horror streak, McGowan remains confident Adelaide are heading in the right direction and could secure the breakthrough win they need when they visit Perth Glory tonight in Harvey Norman Friday Night football at nib Stadium. 

Last season, Adelaide won the Hyundai A-League double after failing to win in the opening eight rounds but heading into this term’s Round 7, McGowan has warned the reigning champions can’t afford to assume they can just do that again.

“I think our performances are slightly better but if we continue to compare us to last season that’s not going to do us any good,” the 25-year-old defender said.

“You know, last season we went on a phenomenal run but we can’t bank on that happening again. 

“So we’re going to need to start picking up points and hopefully tomorrow night is where we start.”

Adelaide have lost in just one of their past seven games against Glory in Perth.
