He’s graced the English Premier League and FA Cup, the MLS and Chinese Super League – not to mention three World Cups for the Caltex Socceroos and Asian Cups.
Now, after much talk and speculation, the legendary Tim Cahill will be seen across Australia this summer in the Hyundai A-League.
Yes, it’s official. Finally!
After it was announced the Socceroo had officially signed for Melbourne City this morning, social media went into overdrive.
Tim Cahill signs with Melbourne City FC
Just like Del Piero a few years ago, the league has acquired a player who is more than just a footballer. He’s a brand. Let’s face it, most Australians know who Tim Cahill is.
And that’s exactly the sort of appeal Cahill has – it’s not just hardcore A-League supporters who’ll appreciate having the Socceroos great in the country.
Fans of other sports and even non-sports fans might just be tempted to check out the great Socceroo – who’s scored at the last three World Cups and has his gaze on an incredible fourth World Cup in 2018 – when he graces A-League grounds across Australia and New Zealand.
An Aussie sports icon (and budding fashion entrepreneur) is coming home and that’s something to celebrate ahead of Season 2016/17.
And who knows, Brisbane Strikers may just be the first to witness Cahill mania after the Queenslanders drew City in the Round of 16 of the Westfield FFA Cup.
In a week when City’s exceptional Bruno Fornaroli signed an extension to his contract as a marquee for three seasons, the club have made their strongest statement yet about the intention to win all three trophies on offer this season.
And City will be huge draw cards on the road this season.
Fornaroli and Cahill together? Now that’s special. And not just for Melbourne fans, but for the rest of the country.
Bring on the new season (corner flags, you have been warned), Tim Cahill is here.
