Cahill: vital City win was for former coach JVS

Melbourne City star Tim Cahill tweeted that Thursday night 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners was for their former coach John van ‘t Schip.

An electric Cahill recorded his second brace for City in the 2-1 victory over Central Coast at AAMI Park on Thursday night.

Cahill double sees City beat 10-man Mariners

The City players wore armbands after it was revealed former coach van ‘t Schip’s father had passed away. The Dutchman resigned his City post a few weeks ago to be with his father in Holland.

Interim City coach Michael Valkanis said after the game the result was reward for another enterprising display by his team.

“I mentioned it last week, we’re definitely playing very well. We’re getting into the box many times and today we had many clear cut opportunities to score,” Valkanis said.

“At the end of the day, I think would be a problem if we weren’t getting into the box and weren’t scoring goals.

“In the future, something is going to click and someone will cop a battering, because the team is playing very well.

“They played well tonight and regardless if it’s 10 men or 11 men, the boys played the style we want to play, created many goalscoring opportunities and as I said, only one man stood in the way, and that was [Mariners keeper] Paul Izzo.”

Cahill’s double takes his season tally to seven goals, moving him to within four goals of teammate Bruno Fornaroli (11).

Valkanis praised his superstar Socceroo, who is having a sensational first season in the Hyundai A-League.

“Sometimes you’ll see him dropping deep, he does that for a reason because he’ll slow down the game when you need to take control,” said Valkanis.

“He’s an outstanding leader on the park and I think he had a very good game.”

Valkanis added:  “Part of the win today will be for John [van ‘t Schip]. We’re here for him and he knows we’re here for him. The whole club

City sit in third spot with 26 points, six points behind Victory in second ahead of the remaining four fixtures of Round 16.
