Bruce’s focus on Reds not green and gold

Bruce Djite says making himself an Asian Cup bolter isn’t his priority as Adelaide United seek to bounce back from their first loss of the season this weekend against the Wanderers.

The Reds went down 3-2 away to Melbourne Victory last Friday, Djite making his return to action after suffering a quad injury in Round 5.

The powerful striker has been touted in some quarters as an option for the Socceroos at centre-forward following a strong start to the Hundai A-League campaign.

But having not played for the national team since 2010, the 27-year-old isn’t counting on catching Ange Postecoglou’s eye.

“I don’t try to play well to be part of that set up,” he said when asked on a possible Australia recall.

“I try to play well to help my team-mates and the club be successful. Any off-shoots of that are welcomed. But look, that injury to my quad, a couple of weeks out, I’m really concentrating on getting back to where I left off and (want to) start playing good football again.”

“The game against Melbourne Victory was a bit of a baptism of fire, a tough game to come back into. I thought I could have done a lot better in that game. Let’s back to playing well first and then anything after that is something else.”

Next up for the Reds is the visit of Western Sydney Wanderers FC to Coopers Stadium, where Dylan McGowan is likely to deputize for calf injury victim Osama Malik.

“Dylan’s done fantastically well early in the season, he was unlucky to lose his spot,” Djite said.

“Doesn’t matter who plays, they’ll do the job, but the boys have a lot of confidence in Dyl.”
