Milestone man Leigh Broxham says Melbourne Victory’s last-gasp win over Perth Glory on Saturday night must be the catalyst for a late-season surge up the Hyundai A-League ladder.
In Broxham’s 250th Hyundai A-League game, Victory prevailed 3-2 in a five-goal thriller at AAMI Park thanks to Kosta Barbarouses’ last-minute winner.
It was just Victory’s second home win of the campaign and sixth overall from 16 games to be currently 10 points off a coveted top-two berth.
But Broxham hopes the manner of the win over a desperate Glory could spark Kevin Muscat’s men on the run to the Finals Series.
“It has to. It’s something to build on,” Broxham told Fox Sports.
“Just the effort. Some of those boys have played three 90 minutes in eight days so the effort that they have put in has been immense.
“You can’t question the effort they have put in. It’s a great platform now and there’s no excuses moving forward.”
Broxham started on the bench but was introduced with 18 minutes left to a rousing reception from the Victory faithful.
Having started at the club as the kit man in the early days, it’s been some journey for the 30-year-old to get to 250 Hyundai A-League games for Big V.
“The three points helps a lot and the late goal makes it that much sweeter,” said Broxham when asked about his milestone match.
“The support I got from the fans and the whole club, from the playing group to the staff and everyone, it was a special few days.
“It really shows the kindness of people and the generosity of this club.”
Victory’s next match – and Broxham’s 251st – is a trip to Sydney next Friday night for a clash with the Wanderers, who themselves are unbeaten in their last four games.
