Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque believes the Sky Blues possess a squad capable of claiming silverware this year, which influenced his decision to recommit to the club for the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 season.
The number 14 said the squad on offer played a major part in his re-signing, and he’s set his sights on returning to the winner’s podium after missing the end of the 2015/16 season through injury.
Brosque is hopeful of playing a part at Dorrien Gardens in West Perth, WA on Tuesday night as the Sky Blues’ first chance at silverware continues against Perth Glory in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16.
“I’ve got unfinished business to get us back where we were two years ago, back on the final day on the big stage and to make sure we win that,” Brosque said.
“I feel with the players that we’ve brought in that there’s a hunger for silverware and I’m looking forward to being amongst that.
“To go away to Perth will definitely get us ready for the season coming but we’re taking a full strength team and will be looking to win [on Tuesday night],” he continued.
“We need to factor in there could be extra time as well, which is an extra half an hour, so whatever part Arnie feels I can play will be good for me.”
The 144-game Sky Blues veteran said he was ready to lead from the front after going through a long rehabilitation process and intense preseason following his hamstring injury.
“It’s been five or six months since I last played a proper match for the club so I’m excited to have signed and I’m looking forward to the season ahead,” he said.
“I put in a lot [of work to get back]. When the boys went away [on their break] I had an extra three weeks of work just to make sure the hamstring, when I came back for preseason, was ready to go.
“[I want] to play more of a part and contribute more than I did last year.
“I think especially in the harder times last year when we weren’t winning, it was tough to sit back and watch and not be able to do much.
“I really look back on last year and think that hopefully if I’m involved for most of this year we can have a good season.”
Sydney FC face Perth Glory at Dorrien Gardens in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday 30 August 8.30pm AEDT. The match will be streamed live on foxsports.com.au
