Suncorp Stadium will host the first match in Australia’s next round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley naming Brisbane Roar’s stunning Hyundai A-League success last season as a large contributing factor to the decision.
FFA confirmed today that the Qantas Socceroos will face Thailand on Friday, September 2.
The growing passion for football in Queensland was highlighted by Buckley when explaining FFA-s decision to give the Brisbane stadium the hosting rights for the opening game of the third round of Australia-s Asian qualifiers.
“There-s no doubt that the crowd performances at our previous World Cup qualifiers against Iraq and Qatar and even more recently when we qualified here in Brisbane against Indonesia for the Asian Cup in 2011, were all key factors in determining that we-d love to kick off the World Cup qualifiers off in Brisbane,” he said.
“I think, added to that, the fact that Brisbane Roar have really ignited the passion for the game not only here in Brisbane but also right across Australia.
“They-ve set a benchmark for the rest of the competition to follow and I don-t think any of us could forget that wonderful night in front of 52,000 people when Brisbane Roar came from 2-0 down to clinch the title.”
Brisbane football lovers have been given an extra boost with FFA and Brisbane Roar joining forces to announce a combined four-match pass for the Thailand match and three Roar home games with the prices starting from just $90 for an adult-s combined four-match pass.
Brisbane Roar captain and Qantas Socceroo regular Matt McKay was hoping to continue Queensland-s winning form across all sports by securing a win in the green and old at his hometown stadium.
“To play in front of my family and friends will be great, but also, I think Suncorp Stadium is the best football stadium in Australia and it-s great that the first step towards Brazil is here in Brisbane,” McKay said.
“The Brisbane public love a winning side, and with the way things unfolded with the Roar last season, we-ll draw a lot more people to this Socceroos game as well.
“Brisbane as a whole, every sport is doing well, so it-s great that the Socceroos can feed off that.”
