Melbourne Victory have confirmed centre-back Brendan Hamill suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in Saturday night’s Isuzu UTE A-League Semi-Final first-leg clash with Auckland FC.
Hamill was included in Victory’s starting line-up for the Semi-Final tie after club captain Roderick Miranda was ruled out with a hip injury suffered in the lead-up to Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Auckland at AAMI Park.

Having replaced Miranda in head coach Arthur Diles’ starting XI, Hamill wore the armband for Victory against Auckland.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Hamill went down after challenging Auckland forward Guillermo May for possession and, after a lengthy delay of play, was helped to his feet by Victory’s medical staff and replaced by substitute Josh Rawlins.
Hamill returned to Victory for his second stint at the club ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, signing a two-year deal with the club in July, 2024. Victory have confirmed the 32-year-old will undergo reconstructive surgery in the coming days, to begin the rehabilitation process ahead of the second season of his two-year contract.

Victory face Auckland at Go Media Stadium on Saturday, May 24 in the second leg of the Semi-Final tie. Diles’ side head across the ditch looking to overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit to reach the 2025 Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final.

After Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Auckland, Diles provided an update on Miranda’s injury, admitting he was “not sure” if the experienced defender would return for the away trip to New Zealand.
“Not sure, he woke up this morning (on Saturday) in a lot of pain,” Diles said.
“We’ve been managing him (for) the last few days, and he pulled through training okay, so we were a little bit surprised this morning when he woke up in the pain he was in.
“We made the decision that if he can’t compete in this game (at) 100%, then he can’t play.
“You saw it’s a battle out there, and if you’re not 100% fit you can’t take the field.”
