Brattan’s family reason for taking part in World’s Greatest Shave

He has one of the most talked-about hairstyles in the Hyundai A-League but Sydney FC midfielder Luke Brattan will shave it all off for a cause very close to his heart.

Brattan is again taking part in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave and will shed his luscious locks next month.

The Sky Blues star is undertaking fundraising efforts in support of his 23-year-old sister Holli-Mia, who was diagnosed with Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukaemia four months ago.

Holli-Mia’s ailment is a very rare type of leukaemia where more than one type of leukaemia occurs at the same time.

The World’s Greatest Shave helps to raise much-needed funding for blood cancer research and provides practical support to Australians diagnosed with blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

“It’s a great foundation that helps a lot of people,” Brattan said on Sydney FC’s official website.

“The reason I’m doing it is my sister, she’s 23 years old and four months diagnosed with a rare type of leukaemia.

“She’s gone through a lot in the last few months and she’s fighting well.  She’s at the end stage now with a bone marrow transplant coming up.

“I just thought, I’ve got long hair, it’s a great opportunity to raise some serious money for such a great cause and for awareness as well. It’s close to my heart this.”

Holli-Mia’s diagnosis understandably rocked the Brattan family, with the Sydney FC playmaker admitting the recent period has been tough on everyone.

But the closeness of his family and from Sydney FC has helped the 29-year-old through.

“It’s been serious, it’s tough, you never believe it’ll happen to someone so close,” Brattan said.

“It’s been very hard, but she’s really strong and our family is really close.

“The club has been fantastic for me, giving me a lot of chances to go up and visit her and it brings everyone closer together.”

Brattan took part in the World’s Greatest Shave in 2017 while playing for Melbourne City and raised more than $20,000.

He will shave off his har at the Sky Blues’ training base at Macquarie University Sports Fields on Friday, March 13.
