Nigel Boogaard believes he has what it takes to become the latest Newcastle Jets captain as the club starts a new chapter in the Hyundai A-League under Scott Miller.
Boogaard, 28, has joined his hometown club for the 2015-16 season after leaving Adelaide United, where he was a key figure at centre-back under the now-departed Spanish coach Josep Gombau.
The former Central Coast Mariners defender is one of the most experienced players in a young Jets squad and wore the armband for a penalty shootout loss to Perth Glory in the Westfield FFA Cup on Tuesday night, Newcastle’s first competitive outing with new boss Miller at the helm.
“To have the opportunity to captain the team was an honour,” Boogaard told the Newcastle Herald. Â

“If it is the case long term, I will be stoked.
“Until that day comes I will do whatever job the gaffer asks me to.”
It remains to be seen who is appointed as the new skipper, with veteran David Carney also a strong candidate.
“The captaincy is there for anyone who shows leadership qualities,” Boogaard said.
“There are a few boys in the group who are showing that, which is ideal.
“Going forward, if it is handed to me, I’d love it. I have always been vocal and tried to influence people around me.
“I don’t think there would be any added pressure.”
The Jets’ A-League season begins away to Wellington Phoenix on October 11.
