Bolton predicts return to the top

Sydney FC custodian Clint Bolton says the club has finally recaptured its mojo after a couple of lean seasons for the Sky Blues.

Sydney FC custodian Clint Bolton says the club has finally recaptured its mojo after a couple of lean seasons for the Sky Blues.

The inaugural Hyundai A-League champions fell well short of the high standard they set for themselves in season-one in the two proceeding campaigns.

But with a number of key signings including marquee man John Aloisi now on board, Bolton can sense brighter days ahead for the glamour club.

“This season’s definitely got the similar feel to the first season, probably the last couple of years have been a bit flat for various reasons,” Bolton said.

“There’s definitely a good feeling amongst the group this year, it’s a good bunch of boys, a very professional bunch.”

“We’ve got the same frame of mind, the same goals and that’s to win just about everything this season – that winning feeling’s there like it was the first year.”

Ask to evaluate his own start to the season, the determined 33-year-old said: “I’m really happy with how I’m going personally, there’s a real fire inside this season,” he said.

“Anything less than silverware at the end and I won’t be happy but if I can say after 23 or 24 games that I’m still playing like I am now then I’ll be pretty happy.”

Bolton’s strong play is made all the more impressive by the fact he has been forced to battle an ongoing neck complaint suffered in the pre-season.

“I woke up with a sore neck and didn’t think a lot about it at the time – it was actually on the day of a game against Wellington in the pre-season,” Bolton recalled.

“We had a little morning get together and I headed a ball and felt this pain go through my neck and could barely move it for a couple of weeks and slowly, slowly it’s settled down a bit but it’s still there.”

“I seem to aggravate it every time I train so I’ve just got to manage it as well as I can.”
