Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti says he is honoured to have been part of the build-up to football’s showpiece event.
Despite missing out on the final 23-man Socceroos squad for the World Cup in Brazil, Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti says he is honoured to have been part of the build-up to football-s showpiece event.
Birighitti was one of four goalkeepers included by Australian national team coach Ange Postecoglu in a preliminary 27-man squad that has spent the past week in Vitoria, Brazil preparing for the World Cup.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper was omitted in favour of fellow goalkeepers Mitch Langerak, Eugene Galekovic and Mathew Ryan when the final squad was announced on Tuesday night.
However, with Langerak believed to be carrying a knee injury, Birighitti will remain with the squad in Brazil as backup, until the Socceroos- opening World Cup match against Chile on June 13.
“I just want to say how honoured and excited I have been in the past few weeks being part of this amazing journey with the Socceroos,” Birighitti posted on social media.
“I am privileged to have been given this opportunity by the boss and all the other coaches to see and experience things that some people can only dream of!
“I’d really like to thank everyone and I’m really looking forward to still continuing training with this great group of guys.”
