He’s scored 116 goals and won four Championships, but Besart Berisha has unfinished business in the Hyundai A-League.
The competition’s all-time record goal scorer is back in Australia after signing for newcomers Western United on Saturday, ending a difficult 13-month spell with Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
The 34-year-old former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory star made just six appearances for the J-League club and did not kick a single ball in 2019.
And although Berisha has won it all in the Hyundai A-League, the prospect of a new start in Melbourne was still one the veteran striker was determined to take.
“For me, the most exciting thing to come to Western United was that it was a new team, a new club and working with Mark Rudan, a hard-working coach who really wants to create history,” Berisha told the club’s official website.

“I decided to come here because I want to keep winning games and trophies, and this is why I chose Western United.”
“The A-League means a lot to me. I joined the A-League after a difficult time in Europe and it was really the breakthrough for me, and A-League has done well for me.
“I’m very thankful for this country and the A-League, but this is why I chose to come back.”
Berisha arrived at the club’s Caroline Springs training base on Sunday.
Western United’s first-ever match is away to Wellington Phoenix on Sunday, October 13.
