Rumours that David Beckham could be his way to Australia have exploded following news that the midfielder is set to leave MLS club LA Galaxy next month.

Beckham announced on the Galaxy website today that he will play his final game for the club in the MLS Cup on 1 December.

“I’ve had an incredibly special time playing for the LA Galaxy, however, I wanted to experience one last challenge before the end of my playing career,” Beckham said.

“I don’t see this as the end of my relationship with the league as my ambition is to be part of the ownership structure in the future.”

Beckham only signed a two-year contract extension in January with the club after his original five-year, $32.5 million contract with the team expired.

The news kicked off another bout of crazed internet speculation, as Australian fans daydream of the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star gracing the Hyundai A-League.

Perth Glory, having already admitted they would “put their hat in the ring” for the star, said “the race is on” via the club-s Twitter account.
