Barbs continue ahead of Allianz blockbuster

Adelaide United skipper Eugene Galekovic thinks Sydney FC are scared of his Reds side leading into this weekend’s crunch semi-final between the pair.

The war of words between the two clubs again escalated on Wednesday with the United shot-stopper suggesting the chatter from their opponent’s camp was a ploy used to mask their deficiencies.

“For some reason they obviously like talking about us,” said Galekovic. “Maybe they’re a little bit scared.

“They haven’t beaten us this season and for some reason every time we play them Arnie comes out and starts talking about us.

“We don’t like talking about other teams, we obviously just worry about ourselves. If we play our football we know we can play anyone off the park.”

The Sky Blues actually haven’t beaten the Reds in their last six league meetings, losing four and drawing the other two. They were also knocked out of the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup by Josep Gombau’s side.

Eugene Galekovic and Nigel Boogaard celebrate at full-time on Saturday night.

On top of this the league’s second highest goal scorers have failed to find the back of the net against Adelaide this season, with Galekovic quick to remind the Sydney faithful what happened the last time the sides met at Allianz Stadium.

“It’s (our head-to-head record) been great . We haven’t lost obviously,” he said.

“We won over there probably playing our worst football of the year and we still got a result so that’s also a confidence thing.

“We’ve got a few players back for the game as well.”

Striker Bruce Djite is one of those players with Galekovic saying the talisman would definitely be available for selection come Saturday night.

“He’ll (Djite) be available definitely. I think it was a one week injury and he said he’s going to be ready for the weekend.

“He’ll train fully the last two sessions of the week and we’ll see how we go.”
