Melbourne Heart striker Eli Babalj has returned to Europe to trial with Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar as he desperately tries to win an overseas contract.
The Yugoslavian-born 21-year-old first joined the Melbourne Heart in 2010 but spent 2012 playing with Serbian Superliga contender Red Star Belgrade, only to return to the Victorian capital when that club failed to completely pay his $100,000 transfer fee.
On his return from Red Star during the 2012-13 A-League season, Babalj signed on with the Heart for the 2013-14 season.
However, both parties agreed that the player could travel to Europe during the off season to conduct trials, if offered the opportunity.
