Some of world football’s biggest players and clubs are set to head to Melbourne next year as part of the Australian leg of the International Champions Cup.
A report in the Herald Sun newspaper revealed Spanish giants Real Madrid, English champions Manchester City and Italian club Inter Milan are believed to be heading to Melbourne to take part in the third edition of the pre-season tournament.
If it gets the go-ahead it means the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure will be on Australian shores for matches between July 18-24.
It’s understood the Victorian State government are kicking in $10million to help bring the heavyweights of world football Down Under.
Given the success of Liverpool’s visit to Melbourne last year – with more than 95,000 fans packing the MCG – organisers are confident of huge crowds to see some of the world’s best players.
With the tournament being staged just a few weeks before their respective European leagues begin, it should ensure each club brings their full squad.
If the tournament does go ahead it promises to be a huge month for football in Australia right in the middle of the AFL season in Victoria.
The annual Foxtel A-League All Stars clash will also be played in Sydney – with English club Arsenal reportedly a target – while the Queensland Government is still trying to convince Liverpool to play at Suncorp Stadium.
