Australia Cup last 16 awaits City thanks to their academy product Oresti

It was a memorable night for Luke Oresti as Melbourne City made it through to the Australia Cup Round of 16.

City Academy product Oresti scored his first senior goal and it was the difference in Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle Olympic.

Patrick Kisnorbo fielded a strong line-up for the trip away to Olympic, with the likes of Isuzu UTE A-League Golden Boot winner Jamie Maclaren, Florin Berenguer and Curtis Good involved for the A-League Men Premiers.

There was no debut for Dutch import Richard van der Venne, who was absent but City still got the job done.

Against a team coached by former A-Leagues star Joel Griffiths in NPL NNSW, City had early chances via Good and Marco Tilio.

Oresti broke the deadlock four minutes before half-time when the ball fell into his path and he coolly tucked home the opener.

City goalkeeper Tom Glover was kept busy at the start of the second half, producing two saves to thwart a rejuvenated Olympic.

However, City held firm to advance from the last 32.
