Aussie refs to take charge of ACL semi-final

Australia’s referees continue to be recognised on the international stage with Chris Beath, Paul Cetranglo and Nathan Macdonald appointed to officiate an AFC Champions League semi-final.

The trio will take charge of the second-leg match between Japan’s Gamba Osaka and China’s Guangzhou Evergrande, which is set to take place in Osaka later this month.

The current China champions, who are managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari, will carry a slender advantage into the clash after they claimed last week’s first-leg 2-1 on home soil.

Scolari’s side currently top the standings in the Chinese Super League, while Gamba Osaka are fourth in the J-League.

Reigning ACL title holders Western Sydney Wanderers defeated Guangzhou 2-0 in China on a pulsating final matchday in the group stage but unfortunately it was not enough to see them progress to the knock-out phase.

Chris Beath, who will be the man in the middle on 21 October, was recently named one of the first three full-time professional referees in the Hyundai A-League.
