Former Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets midfielder Cameron Watson will spend the upcoming season in India after signing for reigning title holders Bengaluru FC for the 2016/17 I-League campaign.
Watson becomes new boss, Albert Roca’s first signing as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
“Cameron is a good player in a position that’s very important to the team. He has a good background playing in Australia which I think is an impressive league in terms of standard and his presence would help us grow,” said the former Barcelona assistant coach.
Watson, who fulfils the Asian player criteria, has penned a deal till the end of the season and will look to partner one of India’s very best, Eugeneson Lyngdoh in midfield.
The 29-year-old revealed that he joined Bengaluru on the advice of former striker Sean Rooney who currently plies his trade at Marconi Stallions FC.
With an AFC Cup quarter-final match up against Tampines Rovers looming, Watson disclosed that he has already started preparations for the big game and is trying to stay fit.
“I’ve spoken to a few people and heard good things about the League,” said Watson.
“I’ve even had a word with former Bengaluru player Sean Rooney who had a lot of nice things to say about the club and I’m really looking forward to joining the team as soon as possible.
“I’ve been training with a local club here and keeping as fit as possible. There’s a big AFC Cup game coming up and the sooner I get there, the better.”
