Around the grounds: Robinson makes first signing, Brebner’s plan excites Folami

Carl Robinson has made his first signing as Western Sydney Wanderers boss, adding promising midfielder Anthony Lesiotis to his squad from Melbourne Victory.

Lesiotis, 20, has inked a two-year deal with the Wanderers after featuring 23 times for Victory last season.

“I spoke to Carl (Robinson) and he was interested to bring me over, I really liked the sound of the project and the plan’s he’s got for the club,” Lesiotis, a former Young Socceroo, said on the Wanderers’ website

“Last season, I learned a lot on what it’s like to play a professional season, playing regular games and learning off other players in big games.

“Hopefully with the Wanderers we can win the league and qualify for the AFC Champions League.”

Folami vows goals for Brebner’s Victory

Melbourne Victory’s on-loan youngster Ben Folami has credited a phone call with Grant Brebner as one of the many reasons he signed for the club for the A-League 2020/21 Season.

Folami became Brebner’s sixth pre-season signing last week, joining the club on loan from English League One side, Ipswich Town.

The 21-year-old striker describes how a conversation with the Head Coach led to him making an “easy” decision on his future.

“Brebs gave me a call and he ran me through all the ideas that he wanted to implement into Victory and where I would fit into those ideas,” said Folami on Victory’s website.

“He sees me as a striker which is great. I can play anywhere across the front but as a striker specifically, so that was good to know he has faith in me to lead the line.

“As a team, he [Brebner] wants Melbourne Victory to play good, entertaining football and ultimately, get results. I really liked the way he set it out to me and it was a no brainer.

“I think I’ll bring goals, obviously that’s the most important one.”

Reds make winning start

Adelaide United has kicked-off its pre-season with a 2-0 win against Adelaide Blue Eagles at Marden Sports Complex on Wednesday night.

Kusini Yengi and Mohamed Toure were on target for the Reds in a hard-fought contest.

“It was a good hit-out, I’ve got to take my hat off to Blue Eagles,” Reds boss Carl Veart said on Adelaide’s website.

“They really came out and worked hard tonight for a game that doesn’t mean anything for them, they really pushed us.

“I’m happy with the performance, first-half was good, we got a little bit sloppy at times but for a first hit-out for the season I’m more than happy.”
