Aloisi hails Roar defence after beating City

Brisbane Roar boss John Aloisi has praised his side’s newfound flexibility after successfully suffocating Melbourne City’s attack in Friday night’s 1-0 win at Suncorp Stadium.

Jamie Maclaren’s 11th minute goal proved the difference as Brisbane denied City a single shot on goal despite the visitors’ dominance of possession.

“If you’ve got players like Macca (Maclaren), why wouldn’t you exploit the space and some of their weaknesses,” Aloisi said.

Jamie Maclaren celebrates with Tommy Oar after scoring against Melbourne City at Suncorp Stadium.

“I thought we created enough chances to win the game comfortably and I don’t think (City) created a clear chance.

“As a whole we defended really well from front to back.

“When you’re stopping a team with the players they have from having a shot on goal, you can say it’s a good performance.”

Aloisi also commended the vocal crowd of over 20,000 for supporting his side to a third straight victory.

“I think it’s the most we’ve had in a home-and-away fixture since Del Piero played here,” the Roar coach said.

“It was a great atmosphere. Beating Melbourne City would have been nice for (the fans) as well because they’ve been hearing a lot of hype about their players and they were the favourites.

“Hopefully they will be back next week.”
