A-Leagues Club Championship set to go down to the wire

With the Ninja A-League regular season now completed and the Isuzu UTE A-League at the business end of the season there’s plenty on offer, however there is also another trophy up for grabs: The A-Leagues Club Championship.

A ladder combining the results from clubs who compete in both the Isuzu UTE A-League and Ninja A-League, the A-Leagues Club Championship was launched ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Melbourne City were crowned inaugural champions with 79 points, 13 clear of Sydney FC thanks to their Isuzu UTE A-League Premiership win, as well as the Ninja A-League side finishing second in the regular-season standings.

STAR XI: Mata leads the way in Liberty’s Isuzu UTE A-League Team of the Week

In 2023-24 the Central Coast Mariners nabbed the trophy away from Melbourne for the first time.

Mark Jackson’s side enjoyed an incredible season which saw them capture a treble of the AFC Cup and the Isuzu UTE A-League Premiership/Championship double whilst Emily Husband’s Ninja A-League side reached the semi-finals in their first season back in the competition.

The Club Championship trophy’s stay in Gosford was short-lived though, because Melbourne City soon regained the title.

In 2024-25 Michael Matricciani’s Ninja A-League side went the whole regular season unbeaten as they clinched the Premiership before Aurelio Vidmar’s Isuzu UTE A-League side finished second in the regular season before winning the Championship.

However, despite City’s dominance since the trophy’s introduction could we be set for a new winner of the trophy in seasons 2025-26?

AS THINGS STAND IN THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

As things stand it’s Melbourne City who currently sit top of the Club Championship Ladder, however the lead has changed three times within the last three weeks!

A huge boost for City was the fact that Michael Matricciani’s women’s side clinched a third-straight Premiership title last weekend whilst Aurelio Vidmar’s side sealed an impressive win over the Wanderers in the latest round of men’s action.

So with just three rounds left of the Isuzu UTE A-League to play, will City hang on to their Club Championship crown or will Newcastle Jets or Adelaide United take home the coveted trophy?

The winner will be awarded the trophy at this year’s Dolan Warren Awards.
