Sydney FC sign talented 16-year-old to long term deal: ‘She has a great future’

The A-Leagues will host its first ever Unite Round this weekend, with every team – men’s and women’s – playing a special round across Sydney.

Sydney FC have signed talented young midfielder Madeleine Caspers to a multi-year deal until the end of the 2025-26 Liberty A-League season.

Caspers initially joined the club in early December and made an impressive debut in Sky Blue in Sydney’s 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets, before featuring against both Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar in subsequent weeks.

She had previously played for Football NSW Institute and Northbridge Football Club, and had debuted for the Junior Matildas last September, prior to joining Sydney.

The 16-year-old midfielder initially signed a short-term deal with the club, meaning her mid-season contract change has led to an enforced playing hiatus as per FIFA regulations.

This means Caspers will miss Sunday’s Unite Round clash with Western United and next Wednesday’s catch-up game against Central Coast Mariners, but be available for selection when Sydney face Newcastle Jets on January 21.

“It has been a whirlwind few weeks for me having signed for Sydney FC and now to have my contract extended for another two years is a fantastic feeling,” said the 16-year-old.

“I have had so much support from the coaches, my team-mates and also our members since I joined the squad and it has helped my transition immensely.

“I’ve really enjoyed being involved and playing my part in earning some crucial points and I am looking forward to playing as many minutes as possible in the second half of the season.”

Sydney coach Ante Juric added: “Maddie has fitted into A-League Women’s football seamlessly and with great ease for a 16-year-old.

“Her excellent performances in games but also in training have forced us to give her a longer term contract.

“I think she has a great future in the game if she continues to work hard and improve and she can be a key player for Sydney FC for many years to come.”
