The Isuzu UTE A-League Men season kicked off on Friday night, with champions Central Coast Mariners falling to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Adelaide United.

The convincing win to the Reds in the men’s followed a 2-1 win for the Mariners’ Liberty A-League Women side over Adelaide in the first fixture of the Friday-night double-header.

Adelaide United have started the season with a bang, defeating reigning Champions Central Coast Mariners 3-0 at Coopers Stadium on Friday night.

A late sealer from defender Nick Ansell added to goals scored by Ben Halloran and Zach Clough on either side of half-time to wrap up all three points for the Reds, who got the post-Craig Goodwin era off to a flying start in the Isuzu UTE A-League season opener.

Mariners defender Jacob Farrell received his marching orders in the 80th minute for a pair of yellow cards earned for two fouls in quick succession on Musa Toure on a night to forget for the Champions in Adelaide.

Central Coast Mariners have survived a late challenge from Adelaide United to record the club’s first win since 2009 after rejoining the Liberty A-League for the 2023-24 Liberty A-League season.

Captain Taren King scored the Mariners’ first goal of the season before Chinese international Wurigumula doubled the advantage shortly after half-time. Reds defender Ella Tonkin halved the deficit with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, but the visiting Mariners held firm to record a 2-1 win, responding in style to an opening-round defeat to Newcastle Jets.
