Victory dealt big injury blow as Matildas legend undergoes ankle surgery

Melbourne Victory have confirmed veteran Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams will undergo ankle surgery in a bid to save her season.

Williams sustained an ankle injury during Victory’s 4-1 loss to Western United on January 6 and hasn’t played since.

Whilst no time frame has been put on her return, Victory say the decision to undergo surgery was taken in order to try and get Williams back on field before the end of the season.

Williams has played 11 matches this season, keeping three clean sheets in the process and will no doubt be a huge loss to a side currently sat outside the top six in the Liberty A-League.

Current number two Courtney Newbon has taken on keeping duties for Jeff Hopkins’ side in her absence, helping them remain unbeaten in their last three matches.

Victory take on a rejuvenated Brisbane Roar in Round 15 at Perry Park and will be looking to exact some revenge on their opponents following their opening round loss at the Home of the Matildas.
