Super-sub steals the show in Canberra as Breier helps new-look Jets take flight

Newcastle Jets produced a brilliant come-from-behind victory over Canberra United in Round 1 of the new Ninja A-League season, with substitute India Breier bagging a dramatic late winner in the 89th minute.

A defence splitting pass from central defender Emma Robers released Michelle Heyman through on goal and the competitions all-time leading goalscorer shrugged off the challenge of Matildas teammate Natasha Prior before slotting the ball home.

Despite having all the momentum and a host of chances, Canberra were clawed back in the 33rd minute as a long ball forward from Jets keeper Anna Leat was brilliantly cushioned down by midfielder Charlotte Lancaster, who then fired the ball past Canberra keeper Sally James at her near post.

Both sides had chances to take the lead but it was the away side who stole the points late in the competition, and it came from a defensive error.

Hunting down a short backpass, substitute Breier stole the ball off of Robers on the edge of her own box before then dispatching her low shot beyond James in the Canberra net to clinch an impressive away win, and the first under new head coach Stephen Hoyle.
